Bluefly July 3, 2008
One of the most recognizable online shopping sites is Bluefly.com. The company originally began as a golf inspired clothing retailer, known as Pivot Corporation and later, Pivot Rules, Inc. In 1998, the seven year old company chose to pursue the path of online luxury brand retailer and at that time, Pivot Rules, Inc. changed its name to Bluefly. Fly meaning quick, nimble and adaptive (like the insect) and Blue because blue is considered a friendly color.
Although Bluefly generated about 5 million in profit (in 1999), like a lot of internet companies, it had an incredibly high burn rate, spending a great deal of funding on marketing. The end of the 90s was a difficult financial period for the company (and other internet based entities) but clearly, it has successfully prevailed.
The notoriety of Bluefly really began around 1999 into 2000 when a few internet savvy consumers surfed the web to find brand name clothing. It was in 1999 that I first heard of the site. Now, almost a decade later, it would be difficult to find a computer literate person who has NOT heard of Bluefly.
Visit the site, create an account and receive emails regarding special savings and deals. The site’s 4th of July sale called “Deal-a-Day”offers an additional 20% of selected items, today (7/3) is dresses and tomorrow (7/4) is bags.
